Hi, my name is Liz and I was diagnosed with breast cancer last November at the age of 21. I had found a lump in my breast a few weeks earlier and had been given a fast referral to the breast unit at Southend Hospital. They did a biopsy and 7 days later I was told I had stage 1 breast cancer, very unusual in someone of my age. I was given a lumpectomy to remove the lump 10 days after and thankfully was given the all clear shortly after that.
Being diagnosed with any sort of cancer at such a young age is a life changing experience. It makes you feel isolated and I found myself regularly questioning, ‘why me?’ I began chemotherapy in February and have my last session this Friday, shortly to be followed by a month of radiotherapy and 10 years of hormone treatment to try and prevent it returning.
I have been lucky enough in some ways, to have a friend of mine, who was also diagnosed with cancer slightly after me, and she too, is a member of Teens Unite. Between the two of us we have had many great days out with the charity, I myself have attended football matches, TV filming and taster days and met many teens and young adults like myself who have also dealt with the effects of cancer.
Being part of a charity like Teens Unite, makes you realise that you are not alone and that there are lots of people out there who can relate to what you are going through. I have made friends, shared great experiences and been given a chance to feel normal and enjoy myself in a time where I have needed support.
I can’t thank everyone at Teens Unite enough for the support that they provide to myself and all the other teens. What they do for us gives us a chance to feel ourselves again and helps us to make the most of a time where things are hard and don’t feel like they will get any better. They give us a chance to share great experiences with people like myself and build lasting friendships with people who understand, first hand, the devastating effects that cancer can have, not only on your health, but in your appearance, your self-esteem those around you and everyday life.
I look forward to all the upcoming events that I will be attending, with new found friends!
We are very excited to add that Liz has now been given the all clear.
